How Often Is Too Often?

Your skin is the body's largest organ and it sometimes can get overlooked when it comes to a wellness routine (and we aren't just talking about your face). Yes you wash your face and body, but do you properly hydrate your skin from head to toe with lotions, serums, skin masks, and exfoliation. How often is too often when it comes to scrubbing off those dead skin cells though.

Regularly sweating at CYL, along with an improved skin routine, and regular exfoliation will change your life and your skin's appearance no matter your age. When you exfoliate skin on a regular basis, it will stimulate collagen production, which improves the overall texture and health of your skin. You'll even notice a plumper appearance, especially in the face, helping ward off fine lines from showing up. Try washing and exfoliating in circular motions upwards to go against gravity, this doesn't stress or pull the skin down.

When you gently polish off dull skin cells, you reveal smoother and fresher skin immediately. Go from looking dull to dewy in a matter of minutes. You can use scrubs, masks, facial cleansers, serums, dry brushing, or even a wash cloth and water to do the deed. Try starting out just once a week, then up the amount of times to 2 - 3 depending on how your skin reacts and what you're using. Normal skin can handle five times per week if you're using a gentle exfoliant. If you have sensitive skin or any conditions like rosacea, stick to scrubbing just once a week. Everyone's skin is different, especially at different ages, which you need to keep in mind. Remember, pressure does matter and you shouldn't go too hard which will end up harming the skin.

Chemical exfoliants should be used one to three times per week. If you opt for a physical exfoliant, which is normally a scrub, aim for three to four times per week. Exfoliation increases circulation, improves appearance, and overall skin health. Remember to exfoliate your entire body, not just the face! Scrubbing helps keep fresh, healthy cells at the skin's surface, removing dead or dry cells.

It's an easy and quick way to stimulate lymphatic drainage, which is filled with immune rich cells, to detoxify from within. This will stimulate oxygen-rich blood under the skin's surface. Lymphatic drainage will literally help your skin and body from the cellular level, similar to benefits of infrared heat therapy. That uneven skin texture will lighten over time, especially any acne scars, light scars, or dark spots to restore skin's youthful appearance. Clogged pores will open, blackheads will finally clear up, and your products will absorb at a deeper level, which means more bang for your buck! Skincare products are able to work more effectively because ingredients are directly absorbed deep into the skin and not just sitting surface level.

A good rule of thumb, if your skin is ever sensitive, red, or feeling tight after exfoliating, reduce the amount of times you scrub weekly. You can use facial scrubbers to really activate your skin, dry brushing, washcloths, or just use your hands, whatever you do make sure to scrub at least once a week to elevate your skin's health. As our largest organ, you need to show it large amounts of love and care as time keeps ticking away. Pro tip, make sure to scrub before a sweat sesh to really detoxify from within. Sweat and toxins will be easier to wipe off on clean, fresh, and exfoliated skin. There's also a lower chance of toxins and sweat getting trapped on the skin's surface post session when the dead skin has been exfoliated away. Elevate your skincare routine to change your life.
