Make the Switch to Mineral Sunscreen

Our skin is actually our largest organ and it absorbs everything we come into contact with. When you use chemical sunscreen, your body will trap those toxins that continue to build up in the body. Make the switch to mineral based sunscreen, it's not only great for your body, but also for the environment!

Although it's more popular to wear sunscreen in the hotter Summer months, you really should be mindful about applying sunscreen year round. Even on a cloudy, rainy day your skin could get damaged from the Sun's rays. Sunscreen can prevent Sun damage, age spots, and even skin cancer. No matter your age, it will improve your skin by applying sunscreen daily. Did you know it takes chemical sunscreen about 20 minutes to soak in and activate, while mineral sunscreen starts protecting the moment you put it on! Another plus, mineral sunscreen has a longer shelf life than chemical based formulas, so you really get the bang for your buck.

Chemical sunscreen has been linked to potentially causing health issues, allergies, acne or skin irritation, and even hormone imbalance. The natural ingredients in mineral sunscreens reflect full spectrum damaging UVA + UVB rays by acting as a barrier on the skin's surface. You can refer to mineral sunscreen as "physical sunscreen" because of the physical barrier it creates on the skin's surface. Always remember to reply every few hours because it sits on the surface rather than absorbing directly into the skin.

When you use a chemical sunscreen, your skin will deeply absorb the chemicals that in turn absorb the UV rays penetrating the top layer of skin. The goal should be to use products in your life that are more natural and toxin free for elevated wellness.

Mineral sunscreen is great for all skins types, ages, and those with sensitive skin. The key is applying a product with SPF 30 or higher to really soak up all the benefits. Look for products that are full or broad spectrum, as this will protect skin from all of the Sun's harmful rays. For those with sensitive or acne prone skin, chemical sunscreen can make your skin worse. In comparison, mineral sunscreen won't absorb directly into the skin and pores, which is less irritating for the skin's surface. Make sure to find a mineral based product labeled non-comedogenic, which means it won't clog your pores.

Many people think SPF is the most important thing in a good sunscreen, but it's really the ingredients...and the cleaner the better! Chemical sunscreen contains oxybenzone, which has been linked to higher risk of endometriosis in females and poor sperm quality in males. This gets fully and directly absorbed into your skin the second you use chemical based sunscreen. Avobenzone isn't a special form of avocado. It's another toxin used in most chemical sunscreens. When this chemical comes into contact with chlorene and UV radiation, it turns into phenol and acetyl benzene compounds, which are incredibly toxic! Other chemicals, like retinyl palmitate, has the ability to actually cause tumors or lesions on the skin's surface. Spray sunscreen can even cause lung damage if you inhale too much.

Mineral sunscreens should always contain the active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to effectively protect your skin. Time to elevate your skin care and make the switch to mineral based products. It's key to remember to apply sunscreen every morning at least 15 minutes before heading outside. Some mineral sunscreen is even lightly tinted and a great alternative to makeup. If you do wear makeup, try shopping for natural products that also contain SPF in the formula, it's a double dose for skin protection! If you're coming in for a sweat sesh, apply sunscreen after you wash your face post session. Time to change your life with healthier products like mineral based skincare.
